Musical Discovery: ‘Raging’ by Kygo feat. Kodaline

First it was Fragile feat. Labrinth, and now Kygo has released the second of three singles before his debut album – Cloud Nine – is made available in May. The track appeared on my iPhone on Friday and I’ve been listening to the song over the weekend. This week’s Musical Discovery is Raging by Kygo feat. Kodaline.

Very much like Fragile, the song begins with guitar riffs which make the song sound like it belongs to the country music category, rather than tropical house. It’s only in the chorus that we see the electronic synth melodies and a laid-back drum rhythm which is typical of the dance subgenre.

Personally, this song is taking a long time to grow on me. I’ve never really been a fan of Kodaline’s mellow vocal style (except After the Fall) or their live performances. Then, when it comes to Kygo’s instrumentals throughout the track, Raging seems to lack the driving drum beat which transforms Firestone and Nothing Left into club anthems – despite their slow and quiet verses.

Whilst Cloud Nine is definitely looking like a diverse debut album – which is great – this song is yet to interest me. I really do hope that there’s more traditional tropical house songs on the tracklist. At the very least, I hope the third and final single release will see Kygo explore fast-paced, creative and bouncy dance music.

It’s time for Kygo to move from slow, ballad-style tracks, back to the flourishing club anthems we know and love.

What do you think of Raging? Are you looking forward to Kygo’s debut album, Cloud Nine? Comment below!

    • Haha! True, but I think he’s deviating a lot from his original style. It’s good that he’s showing off his talents, but it’s time to go back to something more traditional.
